The leading approach in both studios and real life when it comes to urban renewal and combating the fast pace of population growth is to destroy the existing building on the preferred plot and build a brand-new building instead, a move that changes the identity and DNA of the area completely. When My team and I examined the plot before starting our design process, we fell in love with the neighborhood ("Shikun Ledugma") and its building style. In a country like Israel, Where the urban landscape changes so rapidly, we feel like we are losing part of the history and true identity of the area. This neighborhood was built in the 60s and is an important milestone in Israeli architecture.
We also liked the existing typology and layout of the plot, how the buildings both separate Hoofien Street from the park on the other side, yet also at the same time lead into it.

And so we decided to take the unique approach of leaving the existing buildings and incorporating them into the design and thesis. By doing this, we kept the memory of the neighborhood and created a transition between the old and the new, which in our opinion is important for a neighborhood like this, since it is currently going through a lot of drastic changes and a big part of it is currently under demolishing and construction.
